Oil Prices Are Rising — Why PEEK Remains Resilient?

Created on 08.12
Since early 2026, ongoing geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East have driven international crude oil prices sharply higher. As the foundational raw material for the chemical industry, rising crude oil prices directly trigger rapid price increases across chemical products. Feedstock prices closely linked to oil — including aromatics, naphtha, propylene, ethylene, phenol, and acetone — have surged in tandem. In April alone, prices in the chemical raw materials and chemical products manufacturing sector rose 8.9% year‑on‑year.

This wave of price hikes has rapidly cascaded through the entire chemical industry chain — from polyurethanes and elastomers to a wide range of plastic products — placing enormous cost pressure on downstream manufacturers. Many engineering plastics that rely heavily on petroleum-based feedstocks have seen their prices climb accordingly, leaving manufacturers struggling to cope.
Yet amid widespread price increases across chemical raw materials, PEEK (polyetheretherketone) has demonstrated remarkable price resilience.

Why Is PEEK Less Affected?

First, global PEEK production is minuscule, making the oil cost component negligible. Annual global PEEK production is only a few thousand tons. Industry calculations show that just under 5 tons of oil are needed to produce 1 ton of PEEK. With PEEK market prices ranging from 200,000 to 350,000 RMB per ton, the absolute cost increase from rising oil prices, when spread across each ton of PEEK, is marginal at best. In stark contrast to commodity plastics — which are produced in millions of tons annually and are highly sensitive to crude oil — PEEK can easily absorb minor price fluctuations through modest adjustments.
Second, PEEK follows an aromatic monomer route, distinct from the feedstock chains of commodity plastics. While most commodity plastics rely directly on basic petrochemical feedstocks like ethylene and propylene — making their prices highly synchronized with crude oil — PTFE and FEP follow the fluorite chain, while PEEK and PPSU follow the aromatic monomer route. This differentiated feedstock pathway insulates PEEK, to some extent, from direct oil-price transmission.
Third, PEEK enjoys a significant supply-demand gap and strong pricing power. PEEK production involves complex processes and extremely high technical barriers, with only a handful of companies capable of commercial-scale production worldwide. Against the backdrop of continuous upgrading in high-end manufacturing, PEEK's essential-use attributes continue to strengthen. This supply-constrained market dynamic gives PEEK far greater pricing power than ordinary plastics.
Thus, while ordinary plastics fluctuate wildly with oil prices, PEEK — by virtue of its premium positioning, negligible oil-consumption ratio, and unique supply-demand structure — demonstrates far superior price stability.

Exceptional Properties — Why PEEK Deserves Your Attention

If price stability is PEEK's "unexpected bonus," then its exceptional combination of properties is the true reason it is the "King of Plastics".
High Temperature Resistance: PEEK offers outstanding thermal stability, with a glass transition temperature of approximately 143°C and a melting point as high as 343°C. It can be used continuously at 250°C and withstands intermittent exposure up to 300°C. Its heat deflection temperature reaches 316°C (with 30% glass or carbon fiber reinforcement) — far exceeding that of most engineering plastics.
High Strength and Rigidity: PEEK delivers a tensile strength exceeding 100MPa and a flexural strength of 170MPa. More remarkably, it retains significant strength even at elevated temperatures — flexural strength of approximately 24MPa at 200°C, and 12–13MPa in both flexural and compressive strength at 250°C. This high‑temperature mechanical retention is unattainable for the vast majority of plastics.
Wear Resistance and Self‑Lubrication: PEEK exhibits excellent wear resistance and a low coefficient of friction, making it ideal for high‑friction and high‑wear applications. It performs reliably in oil‑free lubrication, high‑temperature, humid, contaminated, and corrosive environments. These properties make it the material of choice for moving components such as bearings, gears, and seals.
Chemical Resistance: With the exception of concentrated sulfuric acid, PEEK resists attack from virtually all chemicals. It withstands non-oxidizing acids, hot water, steam, concentrated alkalis, as well as most organic solvents, lubricating oils, and greases. Even repeated cleaning in high-temperature steam does not degrade its performance.
Dimensional Stability: With extremely low water absorption (0.01%–0.6%), PEEK offers excellent dimensional stability, maintaining precision dimensions even in humid environments.
Flame Retardancy: Rated V-0 (at 3mm/6mm thickness) with low smoke emission, PEEK delivers exceptional safety.
Excellent Electrical Insulation: Conductive, thermally conductive, and anti-static variants are also available through modification.

Choose PEEK — Choose Certainty

In an era of volatile raw material prices, manufacturers need predictable costs and reliable performance more than ever.
While PEEK commands a higher unit price than ordinary engineering plastics, its minimal oil-consumption ratio and unique supply-demand dynamics shield it from the direct impact of crude oil price volatility. Its exceptional combination of properties provides an irreplaceable material solution for high-end manufacturing sectors including aerospace, new energy vehicles, medical devices, and electronics.
